Honeycomb Android 3.0 Review

Honeycomb (Android 3.0) is a powerful software developed for tablets. It is actually the first tablet version of Android. When you get to use a tablet with honeycomb, you will realize that it does not have the physical buttons, which can be found on most devices. Google made the Home, Back and Menu virtual buttons available on the screen while the Search button has been removed already. The Home, Back and Menu buttons can be seen on the lower left of the unit. These buttons reduce their sizes in terms of pixel thickness while a few applications are running simultaneously.

The system bar sits on the bottom of the screen. The soft navigation buttons are on its left side. With this, you can see status notifications and status updates. If you need some extra space on your screen, it can be minimized.

Android 3.0′s action bar is at the top of the screen, which displays context sensitive options and drop down menus. This disappears when there isn’t any application that is open. It has five home screens, which you can customize according to what may be important to you. Honeycomb provides a new visual layout that can modify the page easily and add drop shadows or other visual cues.

Multi-tasking is an amazing ability of any gadget or device and Honeycomb is able to do this wonderful skill. A new Recent Apps list is available in the system bar. This feature allows you to see your previous activity for each of the application that you were using before you minimized the screen for another application.

A tablet is not a tablet without its Keyboard. Honeycomb’s tablet has been redesigned so that it may fit perfectly for those with larger screens. The new keyboard also allows you to get special characters through touch hold keys. This is similar to a laptop or desktop’s hold SHIFT command.

Another improved feature is honeycomb’s easier copy/paste and drag/drop experience. Just like spreadsheets, you can multi-select options, use different cells or multiple pieces of content all at the same time. The drag and drop feature will allow you to pull a piece of content from one application to another.

Honeycomb also redesigned its main widgets like clocks. Other standard applications have gotten a makeover as well.

Improvements have been made for honeycomb’s technical features. Take for example Bluetooth Tethering. You can share your mobile internet connection with other devices via Bluetooth if your network carrier allows this. You can easily synchronize your photos or videos to a laptop or desktop computer via USB. As always, you can also attach a USB keyboard if you want a real keyboard to do the actual work. Another amazing feature is 3D graphics support. These are not the usual 3D pop outs. Special effects like a building will appear when you locate a place via Google maps. You can change from a top view to an actual view of a place.

Honeycomb can be classified as a better version of Android. The features are somewhat spliced in between Windows and Mac. It would be great though if these features can be seen in a cellular phone for a more compact experience.
